New Site, New Look

Welcome to my new and improved website! I’ve been pretty busy, so I haven’t gotten around to posting, but I’m back on the hunt for work, so I’ll be using this site to publish some longer-form content that interests me in the tech and biological science fields. While that’s in the hopper, I’ll tell you what has been happening in my life, for the last few years.

The main thing is that I was hired! This was back in 2022, and I was doing exactly what I wanted to do: I was a ruby on rails developer at a startup. This is in contrast to some previous positions I’d had, the covid layoff job was as an SQL dev, and before that, test automation. I was working at a company called WeSpire, and it was great. I was earning a highly competitive salary, working with an interesting group of people. WeSpire’s mission was also pretty cool (I’m paraphrasing): make the world a better place by providing a social media platform that encouraged pro-social activities, such as volunteering, donations, and organizing for humanitarian causes. Then I was laid off again.

Since then, we’ve had a midterm, a presidential election, and some economic instability, which has made getting a job difficult. As such, I’ve made it a point to branch out in new professional directions. In January I started a graduate certificate program at ASU in biological data science.

The program specializes in big data, Python, R, SQL, and all kinds of interesting biological science areas. That’s what I’ve been doing for the last 7 months or so, and I’m actively looking for work in that area. Maybe I’ll dedicate a post to explaining the program and what kinds of stuff I’ve done in it.

In addition, I’ve been trying to volunteer more, for causes I care about. One of the orgs I signed up for has volunteers accompany immigrants as they go to their hearings. I did my first shift last week, and it was rough. Definitionally everyone there was unsure of what was going to happen; either for themselves, or more often, for loved ones who were unexpectedly called in. I’m looking forward to doing more shifts, and helping out as much as I can.

Anyway, this is the first of many posts I’ll be contributing to my site. Hit me up if you have comments or questions, or a job offer!

I am a Ruby developer in Phoenix, AZ. I'm interested in the intersection of technology and social justice, love weird science facts, and my dog, Coco; a cute black lab/pit bull mix, who won't stop eating rocks.
